Brüno (2009) Film Review

by Andrew on Aug.14, 2009, under Films, Reviews

I was looking forward to this film ever since it was announced after Sacha Baron Cohen made Borat (2006). Whereas I thought Borat was a good film that had a bit of a purpose being made (I always felt the Borat segments in Cohen’s tv shows were too short and there were not enough of them!) his efforts with Brüno are perhaps not as successful.

Indeed there are many funny scenes in this film and many scenes are completely outrageous, contain lots of nudity (even some real sex) and are often downright offensive actually. However this movie seems to lack a story line and the pacing is a bit off at times and it is even obvious that many bits are properly setup rather than improvised which Cohen wants you to believe (ie the bystanders are often in on it). It all doesn’t detract too much from the humour though.

Memorable scenes for me were the tv-show test audience, the invisible blow job, the hunting scene and the gay conversion process (rather hard to explain but hilarious in places!).

Certainly worth a look if you like Cohen’s style of humour and if you did like the Brüno bits in his tv shows. However if you are easily offended I certainly wouldn’t recommend seeing it! Adults only for this one I would have thought!

6/10
