G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) Film Review

Yup you guessed it; yet another Hollywood CGI-Filled yarn. To be fair there are some entertaining scenes in this film. The Paris chase was quite good actually until they knocked down the Eiffel Tower, which I felt was completely unnecessary to the story. And it is exactly this type of stuff I am finding incredibly boring in Hollywood movies these days. It feels like they try to find a vehicle to make a movie with as many CGI effects as possible rather than actually wanting to do a GI Joe movie. It is this type of difference that I think makes a movie like Star Trek stand out as the people behind Star Trek really wanted to make a Star Trek movie. The effects do not make a movie I think, but can enhance it to make it more believable or indeed more entertaining. Modesty is a word that is obviously missing in the vocabulary from this movie making team.

In any case GI Joe gives you what you expect I guess, a mediocre action packed movie and two girls who look good in leather. However the scale of things is far too ridiculous to be believable. The size of the under water base looks larger than ALL bad guy James Bond bases put together, it’s unnecessarily enormous and also the technology used by the bad guys feels like this movie should be set in a much more distant future.

There is also a desparate attempt at the very end of the film to give the bad guys a little human background, ala Spiderman/Batman. Just in case you are wondering why the bad guys are bad I guess…but it comes all too late and can’t save the 2 hours of ridiculously complicated story line you have just had to sit through. The plot sets things up for a GI Joe sequel which I will do my best to miss… Better than Transformers 2 but then how could it possibly be worse or as bad!

4/10
