Anvil – The Story of Anvil (2009) Film Review
by Andrew on Aug.14, 2009, under Films, Reviews
| A fantastic documentary about the long forgotten Metal Rock band Anvil. They had decent success in the mid 80s after which they completely fell off the music radar. This movie gives a great insight into the two main members of Anvil, trying to continue with the band despites many setbacks.
In the film you see that the band members have normal day jobs, go on a unsuccessful tour in Europe and cannot get a break with any record company for recording their next album forcing them to seek financial backing elsewhere. It is a great feel good movie which focuses not so much on the band’s music but more on what happens to them in their daily lives, making it quite accessible for a large audience to enjoy. There are tears and laughter on the way which makes for a good movie. It is interesting that since the movie’s release Anvil have actually gained a fair bit of popularity and are currently supporting ACDC on their North American tour. Good stuff, even if a little on the short side at 90 minutes. 8/10 |

Brüno (2009) Film Review
by Andrew on Aug.14, 2009, under Films, Reviews
| I was looking forward to this film ever since it was announced after Sacha Baron Cohen made Borat (2006). Whereas I thought Borat was a good film that had a bit of a purpose being made (I always felt the Borat segments in Cohen’s tv shows were too short and there were not enough of them!) his efforts with Brüno are perhaps not as successful.
Indeed there are many funny scenes in this film and many scenes are completely outrageous, contain lots of nudity (even some real sex) and are often downright offensive actually. However this movie seems to lack a story line and the pacing is a bit off at times and it is even obvious that many bits are properly setup rather than improvised which Cohen wants you to believe (ie the bystanders are often in on it). It all doesn’t detract too much from the humour though. Memorable scenes for me were the tv-show test audience, the invisible blow job, the hunting scene and the gay conversion process (rather hard to explain but hilarious in places!). Certainly worth a look if you like Cohen’s style of humour and if you did like the Brüno bits in his tv shows. However if you are easily offended I certainly wouldn’t recommend seeing it! Adults only for this one I would have thought! 6/10 |

Orphan (2009) Film Review
by Andrew on Aug.14, 2009, under Films, Reviews
| The trailer makes this movie look like it will be similar to The Omen, which I guess it kind of is. However I thought it was a better film than that and possibly more believable once you know why the little girl is doing such horrible things.
The acting of the girl in this film (Isabelle Fuhrman) is absolutely phenomenal I thought and quite compelling to watch. It might even be oscar worthy I would have thought, not that this type of film usually gets nominations I would guess. Some of the scenes are perhaps quite disturbing without getting too gruesome. Morever the suspense and slight horror feel are both maintained thoughout the film. A good film with a satisfying story line, nothing amazing I would say but definitely worth the watch. 7/10 |

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) Film Review
by Andrew on Aug.14, 2009, under Films, Reviews
| Yup you guessed it; yet another Hollywood CGI-Filled yarn. To be fair there are some entertaining scenes in this film. The Paris chase was quite good actually until they knocked down the Eiffel Tower, which I felt was completely unnecessary to the story. And it is exactly this type of stuff I am finding incredibly boring in Hollywood movies these days. It feels like they try to find a vehicle to make a movie with as many CGI effects as possible rather than actually wanting to do a GI Joe movie. It is this type of difference that I think makes a movie like Star Trek stand out as the people behind Star Trek really wanted to make a Star Trek movie. The effects do not make a movie I think, but can enhance it to make it more believable or indeed more entertaining. Modesty is a word that is obviously missing in the vocabulary from this movie making team.
In any case GI Joe gives you what you expect I guess, a mediocre action packed movie and two girls who look good in leather. However the scale of things is far too ridiculous to be believable. The size of the under water base looks larger than ALL bad guy James Bond bases put together, it’s unnecessarily enormous and also the technology used by the bad guys feels like this movie should be set in a much more distant future. There is also a desparate attempt at the very end of the film to give the bad guys a little human background, ala Spiderman/Batman. Just in case you are wondering why the bad guys are bad I guess…but it comes all too late and can’t save the 2 hours of ridiculously complicated story line you have just had to sit through. The plot sets things up for a GI Joe sequel which I will do my best to miss… Better than Transformers 2 but then how could it possibly be worse or as bad! 4/10 |

Taking of Pelhalm 123 (2009) Film Review
by Andrew on Aug.05, 2009, under Films, Reviews
| Back from seeing the remake of an old seventies classic: The Taking of Pelhalm 123 (must say I never watched the whole original film, but have seen bits). This version starring Denzel Washington (very good performance) and John Travolta (Perhaps a bit too theatrical early on). A good film by Tony Scott, which includes his trademark wacky credits intro, fast paced action, clever quick cuts and tense atmosphere.
I do think however they played it “safe” a bit by not trying something a bit more daring with the story lines. Some minor things could be interpreted as a bit “dumb” I am guessing, such as the fact that there are clearly still trains running in the Manhatten subway system well after the hostage situation becomes clear to authorities. I would imagine they would even try to seal off the whole of Manhatten itself if such a situation would arise. Also the getting money to the Transport office scene seems a bit over the top! However it is a good movie which most should enjoy. A movie I would certainly recommend to the average movie/action flick goer. Well worth the visit. 7/10 |

Moon (2009) Movie Review
by Andrew on Aug.01, 2009, under Films, Reviews
| Saw the movie “Moon” (2009) this evening. It is actually unbelievable that in amongst the 100 Harry Potter screenings there was at least some space for another movie at the cineplex.A very “different” type of film. Not your usual science fiction movie. Although there is some CGI and effects do not expect action or explosions large enough to destroy a plane. This is a science fiction which almost seems like a homage to 2001:A Space Oddessy and its often forgotten sequel 2010. A movie which mostly contains just a single actor. There is even a HAL-like computer voiced by Kevin Spacey (good choice!).
Although I thought the movie took a little while to get going (for at least 45 minutes into it you don’t really get what’s going to happen) it was quite captivating to see how things would pan out. A bit of a weird story you could conclude but certainly the type of film I like to see. The setting is someway into the future where the moon is used to “harvast” energy. The setting seems plausible I’d say. A good movie in my opinion and certainly worth seeing if you like science fiction movies to be more intriguing rather than explosive and full of action. Interesting that the movie is released shortly after the 40th anniversary of the first Lunar landing. It is the best Sci-Fi movie I’ve seen at the cinema this year after Star Trek. 8/10 |

Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen review
by Andrew on Jun.25, 2009, under Films, Reviews
Oh my god. Words fail to describe this awful, awful, awful mess of what cannot really be called a “movie” in my opinion.
And me actually having an appreciation for the MTV – popcorn style movies which Michael Bay is famous for doing (I loved “The Rock”, “Bad Boys I” and especially “Armageddon”) I can ONLY conlcude this one sucks big time. Possibly one of the worst cinema experiences I have ever had (no joke). I just wanted it to end after about 45 minutes in… I definitely would have walked out of the cinema if I had been there alone or if I was with someone else who didn’t like it.
The first Transformers movie would never be in my top 100 films or let alone top 1000 probably but at least it had originality, some interesting ideas and funny bits. I actually remember seeing the Transformers car chase mid way through and thinking it was excellent. The 2nd installment is just ridiculous. 150 minutes of explosions, CGI, empty and uninteresting characters who all pretty much do nothing, plot lines which move far too fast, no single shot that lasts longer than 1 second, Megan Fox (hugely overrated imo) running around for no reason in a slinky top, terrible humour, irritating characters which are unnecessary to the film (Shia’s parents), absolutely NO character development, etc. etc. And believe me I actually wanted to like this film and would have forgiven some of these cliches to an extent but 150 minutes of constant CGI really does not make a movie I think. There is NO heart in this, NO passion for making a movie which harnasses human values to any extent, instead it spits in the face of decency and it makes a Britney Spears musicvideo look like an opus. The “script” must have been 1 single A4 sheet????
Definitely the worst thing I have EVER seen that has had the names “Michael Bay” and “Steven Spielberg” associated with it. I have forgiven them both for “Bad Boys II”, “Pearl Harbour”, “1941″ and “Amistad”. How in God’s name do they get away with making something like this????
Extremely disappointed…. I cannot believe Paramount and Dreamworks have commissioned Transformers 3. I can only conclude they have NO dignity whatsoever and I have lost a LOT of respect for Spielberg on this one too.
A colleague at work pointed out this review by Mark Kermode from a radio show he does on five live. He starts talking about the movie about 17.30 minutes into the broadcast. He makes a lot of good and valid points; this is simply not good enough for a summer blockbuster movie which costs $200 million to produce. Indeed making an action flick based around robots with plenty of CGI is fine and the first installment is perfectly acceptable, but this one is just not. Outrageous.

What a Rubbish film, utter garbage in my opinion. How dare Michael Bay took a pun at Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” when he makes a movie that sucks about a thousand times more than that one even if it was just meant as a joke! (http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/05/08/michael-bay-says-indiana-jones-4-is-gonna-suck/ ).
Like Mark says in his review: I hated it.
SCORE: 1/10
